WHO IS TSUTAYA JUZABURO?
From his book lender beginnings, Tsutaya Jūzaburō (Tsutajū, 1750-97) scaled the heights of the publishing industry to become media king around the beginning of the late Edo period.
From talent-spotting to production, Tsutajū created Utamaro, Sharaku, and other famous ukiyo-e artists.
His firm grasp of period trends meant that he created numerous bestsellers in kibyōshi, sharebon, and other popular literature genres.
A talented producer with a rare talent for marketing, indeed, he was one of the greats of his era.

NHK Taiga Drama: Unbound(べらぼう)
In collaboration with Unbound, the 2025 installment of NHK’s annual year-long historical drama series known as Taiga Drama, currently airing, this exhibition recreates the vibrant townscape of 18th century Edo, a massive cultural hub known today as Tokyo.
Travel back in time and walk the streets the protagonist Tsutaya Jūzaburō―or Tsutajū for short―treaded as he claimed his fame as an ukiyo-e producer.
